Meet Your Teacher

¡Hola!  Soy Señorita Wilson...

I was born in Rutherfordton, NC.  In case you haven't heard of it, it is a small town in Western North Carolina.  I'm sure you are wondering how someone from such a small town became interested in learning Spanish.  Here is my story.  When I was in high school, I decided to become an English and drama teacher because I admired my sophomore English and drama teacher so, so much.  Then, my junior year in high school, my life changed completely.  My Spanish teacher passed around some photos of some foreign exchange students from Chile and Argentina.  I immediately saw a girl from Chile who had the same interests/hobbies as me.  So, I gave my Spanish teacher my telephone number and begged my mom to host an exchange student.  She finally gave in!  Woo hoo!  After my exchange student returned home, I went to visit her the following summer.  That is when I really fell in love with Spanish.  Here is a timeline of my major life events and travels!

1994
Spent one month in Chile visiting exchange student
1995
Spent one month in Venezuela visiting my Spanish teacher
1996
Studied abroad in Costa Rica over the Summer
1997
Spent six months in Chile studying abroad at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (The most prestigious university in Latin America!)
1999
I graduated from UNC Charlotte!  I went to Hungary and Austria for a month.  No, I don't speak Hungarian but I did learn some basic phrases.  I also worked at Walt Disney World at Epcot Center on the college program from Aug.1999-Jan.2000.
2000
I became a flight attendant.  I spent so much money on traveling, I decided to let someone else pay for it for a change!  :)
2001
Can you believe I made 4-5 trips to Madrid, Spain EVERY month for a year?  That totals to 30+ trips!  I was an international flight attendant and the designated Spanish-speaker aboard the aircraft.  I also went to England and Belgium.  In December of 2001 I took a voluntary furlough from my airline job.  I took time off because I really wanted to teach.
2002
I went to Paris, France twice to visit my brother and sister-in-law.  I don't speak French but I wish I did.  They were great interpreters and tour guides!  I LOVE Paris!
2003
I taught English in Guadalajara, Mexico.  That is my favorite Latin American country.  I love the food, the people, the culture, everything.  I always dream of returning.
2004
I took my first teaching job in January 2004 in a high school in Charlotte, NC.

In August 2004, I switched over to Union County and began teaching at Piedmont Middle School.

I recently discovered TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) and I am so excited at the results! It is a method of teaching a foreign language that emphasizes comprehensible input (language students understand) so that students actually learn to speak! It is done through usage of vocabulary words/phrases in stories and songs providing comprehensible input. To learn more about this wonderful way of teaching, go to the following wesites:

"TPR has come out ahead in every single study for over 30 years."
